What do you REALLY need before bringing baby home???
Friday, January 16th, 2009 | News | 1 Comment
- The first few weeks all your baby really needs to grow healthy and strong is you, diapers, and a car seat (the hospital won’t let you take baby home with out one)! We will say that some of these accessories and gadgets are fun and can make your life easier, but are by now way a must!
- Diapers (Millions)- Ok we know all of you “green” moms are gonna scream but cloth diapers? Are you kidding me??? If you use these more power to ya! I think they are unpractical this day and age unless your child needs them for allergy purposes. I have three kids and there is no way I could’ve used cloth! Seriously about 10-15 diapers a day the first two months.
- Burp cloths or extra cloth diapers (10). These are a must! Accept that for the next few months that you might as well permanently attach one to yourself! They will become your everything baby rag!
- Gowns or newborn sleepers (4-6). When at home, a baby gown is perfect for comfort and ease of diaper changes. Remember that unless you have a large baby most outfits are going to be large at first too. I liked newborn sized Play/Sleep all cotton zip up outfits from Children’s Place. They were so soft and cozy for baby and easy to get on and off for changing.
- Receiving blankets (2-3) and swaddling blankets (2-4). For swaddling, holding, changing, playing. Having a bunch, will allow you to have extra while others are washing (which will be often)!
- Crib blanket or quilt. Remember that it isn’t recommended to have blankets in your baby’s sleeping area, but heavier blankets can be perfect for covering baby’s legs in the stroller and car seat or for the crib as your baby gets older, and may become your baby’s “lovie” to take to preschool and beyond, especially if they are personalized like the ones my babies had from bubblecakes baby blankets.
- Newborn socks or booties (4-6 pair). Find ones that baby can’t kick off. I liked Gap and Old Navy’s they had an elastic band around the ankle that helped to keep them on! Footed sleep outfits also work well for keeping feet warm at night.
- Hooded Towels (2-3) and Washcloths (8-10). You will get a lot of use out of these for years to come!
- Onesies (4-6). Depending on the time of year your baby is born you will need short or long sleeve.
Baby Care Products
- Baby shampoo/body wash. Water is often fine to clean little babies. I liked Johnson & Johnson’s Baby wash.
- Diaper cream. I liked Bordeaux’s Butt Paste.
- Baby nail clippers or safety scissors. You need these and will probably use them every few days. Baby’s nails are sharp and they will scratch themselves if they are not keep very short.
- Baby Lotion. There are many to choose from. I like the classic Johnson & Johnson.
- Baby brush and comb. Your baby might not need them for a while, but a fine-tooth comb comes in handy for cradle cap.
- Pacifiers (6-8). Many babies need to suck even when they’re done feeding, so if this is your baby save your nipples and give them a pacifier.
- A baby bath. Newborns are slippery little suckers! I had a tub that had a raised divider that went between babys legs to help keep them in place. This is great because then you have a freehand to wash and rinse baby (remember you should always keep as least one hand one your baby).
Baby Gear
- Baby carrier (sling, wrap or pack carrier). I had a baby bjorn with my second child and it was a lifesaver.
- Carseat (have to bring it to the hospital!). I like the Britax line, and it always ranks well in independent ratings, such as Consumer Reports. But I have used Cosco and Graco.
- Stroller. I always like the combo set that the car seat fit into for when baby is newborn to sitting up. After baby can sit up I prefer a hardy umbrella stroller, McClaren and Cosco have good reasonably priced models.
- Bouncer seat or swing. I recommend both. Out of my three children each one had their favorite that I could guarantee a good twenty minutes of free hands!
- Diaper bag. Pick one to match your style, not your nursery decor! You will carry this for the next three years!!!
- Bassinet/cradle or crib
- Mattress, waterproof pads, at least two sheets and other bedding
- A rocking chair or glider, for nursing and baby (& parent) calming
- Changing table or changing pad.
- Disposable nursing pads. This is a must the first few weeks!
- Some modified lanolin or other product to soothe sore nipples. I recommend using this up to a week BEFORE baby is born too.
- Nursing bras I never used one I just bought a cheap padded bra and pulled it down. I didn’t like the way the nursing bra looked thru my clothes!
- Rental, electric or manual breast pump and storage bottles or bags if you plan to pump milk
- Feeding bottles (2-4 4 oz to start), nipples, and bottle brush if you plan to use bottles
- Sports-bottle for much-needed water!
New Mother Care
- Maxi pads
- Nursing nightgown or comfy pajamas
- Some comfy, flattering nursing tops and/or a nursing shawl so you feel comfortable nursing in front of visitors. I never did this but I know lots of friends that did.
- Nasal aspirator.
- Infant acetaminophen
- Baby monitor. Crucial for letting you get things done around the house and yard without worrying during naptime.
- Night light. Having a low light near where the baby sleeps helps you check on the baby during the night, and having one in the changing area allows for unstimulating nighttime changes.
Other Good Ideas
- Pick out birth announcements (address envelopes before baby comes, if possible) or your child will be two before you get them out!
- Line up friends and family who will bring meals or come help you out at home after the baby is born (and a good friend to coordinate), you will REALLY appreaciate this!
Baby shower gifts that will surely be a hit!
Friday, January 9th, 2009 | News | No Comments
My sister in law just had a baby shower for her 4th child to be born, a sweet baby girl! This is her fourth daughter, so she has seen her share of cute baby gear, cool gadgets and everything that comes with the birth of a child!
I sent her one of our new satin and minky blankets. On it was the name of her newest edition! She didn’t know she was going to receive anything from me since I wasn’t able to make it to her shower. So this gift came as a surprise!
When I got home that night she called me at around 10:00 pm (which is very late for a pregnant girl) and gushed over how cute the blanket was! How she loved the personalized cake box it came in and the matching diaper bag tag. She said it was the best gift she received at her shower. All the ladies passed it around and cuddled with it, saying it was so nice!
I was please that she loved it! Then she said, but there is only one problem with your gift. I was like oh no…. what???? She said she didn’t know how she was going to keep it away from her three year old who instantly latched on to it! I laughed and said, “well… I’ll see what we can do about that!”
8 Tips on throwing a celebrity style baby shower!
Thursday, September 18th, 2008 | tips | No Comments
1. Theme - This will make everything you decide to do easier. You can go with the mom to be’s theme for the babies room or just something that the mom to be likes.
2. Custom invitations - This is a great place to kick off your theme. If you are crafty you can even print these yourself. (remember to send them off at least three weeks in advance)
3. Decorations - Another place your theme will come in handy! Just a few great ideas are: fresh flowers, fancy linens, balloons, a clothes line with baby items clipped on with clothes pins and a diaper cake.
4. Make introductions - or have each guest introduce themselves and how they know the expectant mother, or have the mother to be introduce each guest and how she knows each one.
5. Motherly advice - Have each guest write on a card their personal advice for the mom to be, then let the mom to be read them aloud. Some will be funny, some will be sweet but all will be fun!
6. Play games and give party favors - Who doesn’t like a cute gift? Play a few games for cute prizes like scented candles or lotions! At the end of the shower give each guest a party favor that coordinated with your theme.
7.Buy Luxury baby gifts - A celebrity style baby shower wouldn’t be complete without celebrity styled gifts for the new baby! Anything personalized will automatically become a heirloom, or go for something the mom wouldn’t normally splurge on. (NEVER BUY DIAPERS)
8. Don’t forget to pamper the mom to be - On the invitation include a request for a 5 dollar donation from everyone to chip in on a spa package for the mom to be. What a better time to get primped and pampered. She will be so grateful!
